Welcome to the new AHAD Health & Wellness website and our inaugural blog. We will be posting a new blog article every week to help you with your health and wellness journey.
As a board- certified healthcare professional I'm committed to bringing you the latest information to help you understand how diet and lifestyle decisions are essential components to attain and maintain good health. I have been a vegetarian and exercise enthusiast for decades and it has certainly been worth my time and effort because now that I am past my middle - age phase of life, I have no medical problems-other than partially ruptured right knee cartilage-and I require no daily medications now or have I ever.
You can potentially have the same or better results by making healthy choices with your diet and health behaviors. When I learned about Lifestyle Medicine in 2018, I was hit with a powerful Eureka moment. I felt like all that I valued both professionally and personally had come together in a medical specialty that I wished had come into existence years earlier.
So what is the Lifestyle Medicine path to health and wellness? The American College of Lifestyle Medicine's definition is as follows:
Lifestyle Medicine is the use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic interventions - including a whole- food, plant predominate eating pattern, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections - as a primary modality delivered by clinicians trained and certified in the specialty, to prevent and treat and often reverse chronic disease.
I like to add the importance of developing a strong spiritual foundation/connection as a seventh domain, but this is not part of the ACLM definition. Our next several blogs will dive deeply into each of the above Lifestyle Medicine domains. Until then, stay healthy and well!
