What is Health and What is Wellness?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The definition of health has evolved over the past few decades from a predominantly biological-based understanding to a more wholistic conception of health that includes the social determinants of health. Of course, health can be either good or bad and we all seek good health as one of the, if not the most, important goals in life. Some of the important variables that can influence health are: income and social status, social support networks, education and literacy, employment and working conditions, social environments, personal health practices and coping skills, healthy child development, biology and genetics, healthcare access and gender(WHO).

Wellness is defined by the World Health Organization as the optimal state of health of individuals and groups. It is the practice of healthy habits to attain better physical and mental health outcomes so that you are not just surviving but thriving. Others define wellness as a way of life - a lifestyle that you design to achieve your highest potential for well-being. (John Travis MD). Wellness considers the whole person, an individual’s feeling of balance, energy, peace and productivity (Beth Frates MD).

Wellness is a proactive process towards good health and the two terms are inextricably related. Wellness is the bridge or steps that lead to well-being and health. There are six basic dimensions to wellness:1) physical, 2) emotional, 3) intellectual, 4) social, 5) spiritual, 6) environmental, and some experts include a financial dimension as well.

Physical wellness involves exercise, nutrition and proper sleep.

Emotional wellness requires awareness of your feelings and analyzing your response to various interactions and situations.

Intellectual wellness involves pursuing creative and mentally stimulating activities and lifelong learning.

Social wellness requires us to foster supportive and meaningful relationships with individuals, family and groups.

Spiritual wellness encourages us to search for our purpose and exercise introspection. Our beliefs, faith, values, ethics and morals can be important tools in this dimension.

Environmental wellness requires us to appreciate and have regard for nature and all living species. It also encompasses avoiding land, water and air pollution.

Financial wellness involves having enough income to meet the expenses of daily living and successfully managing money matters.

Overall, health and wellness is when you feel good and are content with your life circumstances. AHAD Health & Wellness can help you get there when you're ready.
